Personal loan surety

Surety support that helps more Canadians build their credit history.

SureNorth works with financing companies across Canada to add personal loan surety to their lending programs. When an application meets the applicable requirements, our surety may support the request submitted to the partner lender.

Built for financing companies

SureNorth operates behind your program.

SureNorth does not accept applications directly from the public. The partner company maintains the consumer relationship, collects the required information and submits eligible applications through the agreed process.

  1. 1

The consumer applies through the financing company.

  2. 2

The lender reviews the application under its policies.

  3. 3

An eligible file is submitted to the SureNorth program.

  4. 4

SureNorth assesses the applicable surety requirements.

  5. 5

The partner communicates the decision and terms to the consumer.

  6. 6

The lender administers the loan and, where applicable, reports payment history to credit bureaus.

Transparency

What consumers should know.

  • Approval is never guaranteed.
  • SureNorth is not the lender and may not set the loan’s rate, fees or terms.
  • The lender or provider named in the contractual documents is responsible for the product it offers.
  • The ability to build credit depends on payment conduct, the provider’s reporting practices and the credit bureaus’ methods.
  • A prepaid card is not, by itself, a revolving credit account.
Our goal is to broaden access to responsible financing solutions and help eligible consumers establish a positive payment history when payments are reported to credit bureaus.

Good questions

The essentials, in plain language.

Read the full FAQ
Does SureNorth lend directly to consumers?

No. SureNorth works through partner financing companies. The lender identified in the program documents receives the application and provides financing when it approves the request.

Does surety guarantee approval?

No. The lender and SureNorth apply their respective criteria. A file may be approved, conditionally approved, returned for documents or declined.

Are payments reported to credit bureaus?

This depends on the lender and product. The partner must state whether the account is reported, to which bureaus and how often.

How does a company become a partner?

It provides contact information and a description of the proposed program. SureNorth then evaluates commercial, operational, financial and regulatory fit.
